Dec. 22--It's time to decorate a tree for the birds. Sometimes I don't get around to it until the week after Christmas, but by then our mostly sunny Decembers have turned gray with drizzle or sleet. Feeding songbirds in winter is already a popular habit in North Texas. But bejeweling a small tree or bush with birdy treats -- garlands of plain, unsalted popcorn and cranberries, pine cones smeared with peanut butter, even corn cakes and frozen oatmeal cookies, if you're the industrious sort -- brings the colorful creatures to your yard and also provides extra calories birds need to survive the winter in good health.
