Dec. 23--Fashion note for the new year: new executive saloons will start to look like coupes. Boxiness is out, sleekiness is in and for 2007 the four-door Jaguar XF, the BMW M3 and the Mercedes-Benz C-class will have high waistlines, small windows and smooth rounded rumps. This is automotive haute couture.

The Jaguar XF replaces the S-class next autumn. It has been drawn up by the gifted Ian Callum, appointed a Royal Designer for Industry the other week, and he has got his way at last.
