Gustave Flaubert once wrote that the longer one looks at something, the more interesting it becomes. That observation certainly holds true for the most recent German Yearbook on Business History. The majority of the articles it contains are highly specialised, focusing on specific German companies (Siemens and AEG), industries (tube-making, electricity), or events (the currency reform in West Germany in 1948, or the German foreign exchange crises of 1950-51) at particular points in history. The opening chapter -- the only one to deal with a country other than Germany -- appears at first sight to be especially esoteric and unwelcoming to the uninitiated, being concerned with ...
