Switched Ethernet hubs have caught on with local-area network users (LAN). Ethernet switching hubs, like multiport bridges and routers, can support multiple, simultaneous connection paths with LAN segments. Unlike bridges and routers, however, Ethernet switching functions are performed on hardware instead of relying on software, and use a switching matrix to move packets between ports. The features of Ethernet switching hubs offered by various companies are compared.
The Ethernet switching hub bandwagon has started rolling. But the most useful bells and whistles are proprietary.
