Dec. 24--WATERLOO -- Pat Sass and her family were often searching for a few extra dollars during the winter months in the 1960s. "My husband was a carpenter, and every year he got laid off," Sass recalled. "We had to live over the winter months on the money he earned during the summer, so I decided it was time to go out and get a job."
