As small and midsized companies rush to adopt and expand employee benefits programs, more and more accounting firms are apparently rushing to offer consulting and administrative services.
"Every CPA firm has a builtin practice that many haven't yet discovered -- advising existing clients on employee benefits," said Maury Cartine, senior tax principal for Roseland, N.J., accounting firm Rothstein, Kass & Co., which does about 5 percent of its $12 million in annual revenue in employee benefits consulting.
