The central government's latest regulation on child labour came into effect on 1st October 2006, prohibiting employment of children as domestic servants in dhabas (roadside eateries), restaurants, hotels, motels, teashops, resorts, spas or in other recreational centres. The prohibition was brought into force by including these places in the list of hazardous occupations, where child labour is already prohibited. The ban has been imposed under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986. In India nearly 14% of the children below the age of 14 years are involved in some form of child labour.
