Dec. 26--The Dec. 26 holiday Boxing Day is one of the more civilized traditions that should have spread to the United States from England.

Those shuffling off to work today after a busy Monday of Christmas festivities and too much high-fat food are probably a bit jealous of those in Australia, Britain, Canada and New Zealand who slept late and got Boxing Day off to a proper start. Many areas settled by Britain celebrate Boxing Day. Our nation is a notable exception.

Oh well, we say "apartment" instead of "flat" and "elevator," not "lift," and we don't take a "spot of tea" in the afternoon (another very civilized tradition), and we go to work on ...
