Dec. 27--On Aug. 9, 1974, the nation's only unelected president, Gerald R. Ford, was sworn in, proclaiming, "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over. Our Constitution works."
The "accidental" president -- later lampooned for his ongoing accidents (despite having been a star football player at the University of Michigan) -- died last night at 93.
History will regard him as a healer who restored confidence in an executive branch accused of criminal activities.
On Dec. 6, 1973, Ford, a 12-term Republican congressman from Grand Rapids, Mich., and the House minority leader, succeeded Spiro T. Agnew as vice president. Agnew resigned ...
