Jakarta, Dec 28 (ANTARA) - A series of ecological disasters, ranging from earthquakes, landslides, and flash floods, swept through many parts of Indonesia in 2006.The country saw flash floods and landslides at the start of 2006 when tens of people were buried alive in the mud after landslides hit Kemiri village in Jember district, East Java.

Many put the blame on man-induced environmental damage for the calamity.

"The disaster was not merely caused by high rainfalls but also by environmental destruction. Rainfalls were only the trigger," executive director of the Forum for the Environment (Walhi) Chalid Muhamad said.
