SAN JOSE, Calif. _ The San Francisco Giants can't malign and ignore the lunatic fringe any more, because guess what, sports fans: The Giants just became the lunatic fringe.
Heck, Peter Magowan and Brian Sabean actually out-loonied the fringers with Thursday's seven-year, $126 million agreement to sign Barry Zito, a deal that features the Giants outbidding the nearest competitor by at least $41 million.
A coherent baseball decision? Only if Zito, 28, stays healthy and remains consistently good for the grand majority of the richest contract ever given to a pitcher.
