PERHAPS AN ALTERNATIVE title for Robert Hughes' recently released memoir Things I Didn't Know might be Things I Shouldn't Have Said. The world's most famous art critic would like us to believe that he was an accident. His arrival ten years after the birth of his brother Geoffrey, he attributes to a failed condom "forbidden to Catholics under the Church's draconian anticontraception teachings". It is just this kind of observation, conscripted for colour, probably wildly inaccurate, which has set many a target's teeth on edge over the decades, and on this occasion might be calculated to cause maximum offence to some members of his family.
