Dec. 29--Workers at Culp and the few remaining members of Ameritex's office staff got unwelcome news in the weeks before Christmas; their jobs would be gone by spring. They weren't the only ones. About 810 people got the same sad news this year. It was an improvement over the record-setting 1,345, at least, who learned they were to be put out of work in 2005. WestPoint Stevens closed last year and Culp started paring down its local staff.
