An onslaught of candidates filed nominating petitions Monday for Elgin City Council, sparking February primary elections for council and mayor and ensuring an intense four-month campaign.
Three candidates have filed petitions to run for mayor and 11 now have filed for city council.
Pending petition approval, a Feb. 27 primary will narrow the mayor's field to two and the city council field to six for the April 17 primary election.
"The more the merrier," incumbent council member David Kaptain said. "Evidently, people feel that there are enough issues that they want to talk about."
