Dec. 30--I DON'T MEAN to throw a bucket of ice water on all you new-born Zitomaniacs. Really, I don't. If you're a Giants fan, you're entitled to a few days of joy in what has been a dismal offseason on the heels of back-to-back sub-.500 campaigns. Go ahead, pop the champagne. Celebrate the Giants' signing of pitcher Barry Zito to a seven-year, $126 million contract -- and the fact that you don't have to write the checks. Your team is obviously better with Zito than without him. So party on and lose yourself in Zitomania. Just don't go too crazy. Don't make more of this move, as bold as it may be, than you should.
