Over the years I have been disturbed whenever an organization wants to set itself up as the overseer of one national standard or certification. The American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) repeatedly said that it wanted one standard for midwifery care (theirs), and it has been an uphill struggle for the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) to get agreement from them that what is most important are "core competencies" and that there might be many routes besides university training to obtaining such competency.
