It is extremely encouraging that a number of U.S. Senate Democrats and Republicans are not dawdling in planning for comprehensive immigration reform _ a goal that needs to be high on the to-do list in the first half of 2007.
Their agenda includes a dramatic shift in the current Senate proposal _ dropping the senseless idea of a fence along the Mexico-U.S. border, as well as a requirement that millions of illegal immigrants leave the United States before becoming eligible to apply for citizenship.
