I was initially suspicious of The Nativity Story, distrusting films that claim to be based on scripture. For me, religious content in the cinema should be implicit, and something the audience only gradually comes to sense.
That's because movies are basically a realistic medium. The camera should not be asked to imprison the supernatural in a specific shot. The painter is in a better situation to suggest that she or he has chanced on a moment of illumination. Icon painters, using techniques emphasizing a symbolic reality, have a special advantage.
