In his fictional narratives, he's a nebbish, a clown, a witty neurotic Jewish intellectual, a moral dissector of all manner of trivia and temptation, a comedian who feels guilty if he steals a kiss or second base.

In real life, if we are to believe his interviews in Time and Newsweek, he's obtuse, unfunny, a Freudian dunce, devoid of shame, culpability or insight. He talks about a sexual relationship with his long-time mistress Mia Farrow's adopted daughter, age 21, for whom he was a paternal ...
