Health care workers and parents squared off against restaurant owners Thursday night during a public hearing on a law to restrict cigarette vending machines.

The restaurant owners, many of whom said they were not smokers and had relatives who died from lung cancer, told an Albany County Legislature hearing that removing the machines would harm their businesses.

"Smoking is a filthy, disgusting, abhorrent habit," said Donna Prinomo, owner of Yono's restaurant and vice president of the state Restaurant Association. But she insisted that "minors are not buying cigarettes at Yono's."
