T he first strawberries of the season are on the shelves at local supermarkets and produce stores, and their arrival is certainly a sign of warmer times to come.
Much of California's strawberry harvest was spared by the recent drenching rains in that state - the 1992 crop is expected to exceed 1 billion pounds. "This season's berries have beautiful colors and great flavors," said Don Blackford, produce manager at Super Shop 'N Save on Wolf Road, Albany. "Considering the tremendous rains in California, the prices are great, too, and they're heading down."
