He was born Leslie Lynch King Jr. in Omaha, Neb., the son of Dorothy Ayer Gardner King and Leslie Lynch King Sr., someone he met only twice in his life.

His parents separated two weeks after his birth.

His mother married Gerald R. Ford two years after her divorce was final. The couple began calling her son Gerald Jr., although he did not legally adopt that name until he was 22.
