Instead of talking to each other and cooperating on the job, blacks, whites and Hispanics working a nighttime production shift at The Charles Freihofer Baking Co. Inc. had been hurling racial and ethnic slurs.
As workers became more sullen, necessary communication stopped. Productivity plummeted.
So Freihofer's, which already was engaged in training its managers to handle a culturally diverse workplace, brought the program to production workers ahead of schedule.
