In 1965, M. I. Steblin-Kamanskij accepted a part-time appointment at the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. The Leningrad branch the Institute of Linguistics was instructed to set up a Scandinavian research group. Steblin-Kamenskij agreed to organize it on several conditions, one of which was that the Institute admit a graduate student of his choice. His demands were met, and he invited Iurii Konstantinovich Kuzmenko to start graduate studies under his supervision. In the summer of that same year, Kuzmenko received a B.A. from Leningrad University, where his major had been Swedish.
