When audio joined video to create home theater, the receiver became crucial to the union. As always, the receiver controls volume, tone and the balance between left and right stereo channels. But now the more versatile receivers can direct sound to as many as six speakers for surround-sound effects. The receiver lets you select source and destination for a program -- routing a CD recording or an FM broadcast to the tape deck, say, or a prerecorded movie from a laser disc to the TV set.
