The unassuming cassette tape has proved to be a remarkably resilient product. Initially developed some 30 years ago to record and play back speech, cassettes have been improved and refined enough to handle the increasingly stringent demands of reproducing music from CDs and other high-quality sources.

Cassette tape has coexisted peacefully with LP records and CDs largely because it has been the only popular medium that lets you record live events or assemble personalized recordings of favorite selections. In the years ahead, conventional cassette tape will have to compete with two new and inherently superior products - minidiscs and digital compact cassettes.
