The State Department on Tuesday acknowledged that U.S. diplomats had until this week maintained contact with Hamas, a militant Islamic group that the State Department itself has branded a terrorist organization.
But acting State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher said the United States has severed ties and insisted that those contacts did not constitute a "political dialogue with Hamas."
