WASHINGTON--The president of Golden Rule Insurance Companies last week rejected charges that the company tries to intimidate legislators, regulators and policyholders as unfair and lacking any factual foundation.

Testifying at a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing, John M. Whelan issued a point-by-point rebuttal of charges leveled by two state legislators, a state regulator and a representative of a single-payer activist group.

"Certain of the charges reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of the business of insurance," Mr. Whelan said. "And some simply are unfortunate broadside attacks which lack any factual foundation."
