COLONIE Bob Griffin calls it empire building, and on Sunday, the makings of those miniature worlds tiny Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants, bright-yellow suburban ranch houses and miles of train track lay before generations of model railroad dynasties.
The symbolism of toy trains is as intricate as the speeding 1950s-era Santa Fe engine or a gritty replica rail yard displayed Sunday by the Empire & Eastern Division of the Toy Train Operating Society. Griffin is president of the division, which stretches from the Canadian border to Utica and the Berkshires and throughout Vermont.
