ALBANY New York state prisons chief Thomas Coughlin said Wednesday he would retire from his $102,335-a-year post on Aug. 1 15 years to the day after he took the job.
Coughlin, a former state trooper, had earlier served as head of the state's Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.
Coughlin's resignation comes less than five months before Gov. Mario M. Cuomo goes before voters in his bid for a fourth term. Coughlin is New York's senior commissioner and had the second-longest tenure of any state correction chief in the nation.
