Everything from virulent viruses to passive smoking has been suggested as a cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), or crib death.
The recently-issued warnings not to place infants to sleep on their stomachs or on pillows or plush mats are an effort to curb infant deaths caused by smothering in bedclothes. But for the most part, the cause or more likely, causes of crib death are largely unknown.
