NEW YORK A suspicious, smoky fire in the basement of Saks Fifth Avenue forced the evacuation of the stately, world-famous department store on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire, in at least one trash bin, sent smoke into the sales floors of the 70-year-old Fifth Avenue building, known for its Christmas window displays. At the height of the blaze, smoke poured out of the main entrance of the store, located in one of the world's premier shopping districts.
