LOWELL, Mass. Lucy, with purple fingernails, is on her lunch break. She has gap teeth, but is pretty nevertheless, with a distant smile, tossing plated hair away from her face as she contemplates Jack Kerouac's stream of words, now carved in marble.
But here in the hush of the Jack Kerouac memorial garden by the old canal in Lowell, the author's birthplace, there are other things to read.
