Family child care, the most widely used form of child care by employed mothers in the United States, is often of poor quality, according to a broad study released Thursday.
Only half of the 225 children in three cities studied by the Families and Work Institute, a private research organization, showed signs of trust or attachment to the people who cared for them, even if those providing the care were relatives.
Forty-one percent of those watching the children planned no activities for their charges, and the researchers estimated that in 35 percent of the cases, care was so indifferent it might actually hurt the ...
