GILROY, Calif. The aroma of garlic is the sweet smell of success for Don Christopher. He's the nation's leading producer of fresh garlic, thanks to the public's passion for the most assertive member of the lily family.
``Once you start using garlic you find how good it is and you never stop. . . . The more you use the more you like it,'' he said.
Christopher Ranch, about 75 miles south of San Francisco, produces about 50 million pounds of garlic a year, more than 12 percent of the harvest in California, where nearly all the U.S. crop is grown.
