Those who still harbor reservations about the magnet school concept should consider the success story now unfolding in Albany.
In a dramatic turnabout, the Philip Livingston Magnet Academy is having an enrollment surge. Just a year ago, there were 430 pupils attending the school on Northern Boulevard. This year, the number has soared to 604.
Why the higher numbers? Some of the new enrollments can be attributed to an increase in parochial school transfers, and the fact that some parents who live in the neighborhood sent their children to the academy even though they hadn't applied for magnet school placements.
