ALBANY New York's apple crop, the nation's second largest, will be bigger than projected this year.
Growers predict the crop will be 1.05 billion pounds, or about 2 percent more than they forecast on Aug. 1. If that prediction holds true, this year's crop will be 21 percent larger than the 870 million pounds harvested last year, the state Agricultural Statistics Service reported.
Western New York's crop will be about 700 million pounds, or 27 percent higher than in 1993. It will also be 4 percent higher than the five-year average for the region of 670 million pounds.
