Women who don sneakers to walk to the office in comfort or lace up a pair of athletic shoes to work out often need to take some special precautions. That's because many athletic shoes are poorly designed for women, doctors report.

``Women's feet, like the rest of their bodies, are not shaped like men's,'' said Carol C. Frey, associate professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. ``We have a smaller forefoot, and whole lot smaller heel.''
