Herbert London, in a move he said showed taxpayers what an independent comptroller he would make, returned a $10,000 contribution Friday from a key supporter who questioned his public statements against fellow Republican, and gubernatorial candidate, George Pataki.
``It was unusual. Maybe unorthodox. But it's also true I managed to get the attention of some people,'' said London, explaining the latest in a string of peculiar actions generating interest around one of the state's more obscure races. ``If we were put in a position between maintaining our independence and $10,000, it was an easy choice.''
