One year after the end of World War II, the region's health care industry was tiny, employing about 700 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, or one worker for every 754 people.

But fast-forward to the 1990s, and you find a dramatically different health care industry. The aging of the population has increased demand for health care services and health care workers 33,100 people now work in the health field in the Capital Region, one for every 23 people.

While the region's work force more than doubled since 1946, the health care work force increased more than 50 times.
