Trying to punch out a cop these days can leave you gagging and your eyes burning.
More and more police agencies across the Capital Region are equipping their officers with pepper spray, a non-lethal alternative in the police arsenal of weapons. The effectiveness of the spray, according to its advocates, was illustrated this week on Interstate 787 when state Trooper Joseph Carpenter, having just been pummeled by a motorist he had pulled over, squirted pepper spray into the car, forcing its occupants to abandon the sedan a short distance down the road.
