To date, the history of the radical 1960s has been written mostly by original New Left activists or fellow travelers some of whom managed to land positions in the universities as ``scholars'' of the period.
Leading movement figures such as Tom Hayden, David Dellinger and Todd Gitlin have left us with self-serving personal memoirs or partisan histories. More recently we have had two heroic accounts of the Black Panthers by Elaine Brown and David Hilliard, both ex-chairmen of the party.
