About 16.4 million cellular phones were in use in the United States in January, according to the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, up from 10 million a year ago.

About half of the total are portable cellular phones, which you'll see people using in restaurants, at conventions, at sports events, on construction sites, on trips just about anywhere.
