CHARLESTON, W.Va. When they huddle to start the day at this football camp, the first calls are made by an academic counselor, not a coach or quarterback.
Some high school football camps, like the Big East-ACC Roundup Camp, are joining many basketball camps in teaching athletes about college aptitude tests.
Alex Komons of Morgantown, the camp director who once helped West Virginia University with recruiting, believes academics are becoming as important as 40-yard dash times and weight-lifting totals.
The reason is the NCAA's decision to toughen qualification standards for athletes.
