WASHINGTON (1) Separation by race or gender is just another name for racial or sexual segregation. Whatever temporary good may come of it is outweighed by its fundamental wrongness. It is unlawful in America, and ought to be.
(2) Separation by race or gender, while generally contrary to public policy, may sometimes be an effective way of dealing with serious educational or other social problems. As long as the separation is clearly voluntary, and limited to a specific defensible purpose, it ought to remain available as a lawful possibility.
