It is evident we are now going to get a crime bill passed into law. Reportedly, enough members of Congress have managed to get enough in and out of the original proposal to suit their satisfaction. After the final vote, each of the 535 members will be able to go to their districts and pronounce how they did something to curb crime.
Unfortunately, crime will not much be curbed by this bill. It constitutes a huge package of ``anti-crime measures,'' to be sure, and it will cost many billions of dollars. But the centerpieces of this package mostly give the appearance of something being done.
