Almost anywhere you turn here, you'll see the symbols of world-class athletic glory. The Winter Olympics, held here in 1932 and 1980, have moved on, but the sledding, skating and skiing remain challenging.
From the chairlift on the Mountain Run at Whiteface ski area, you can see two brown shacks, clearly marked as the starting points for slalom and giant slalom races of the 1980 Games.
The region's Olympic heritage is just as obvious in and around the village, with ice rinks, bobsled and luge runs, and the huge ski jumps that stand like sentinals outside of town.
