After a particularly difficult scene on the Texas set of "Midnight Cowboy" in 1969, director John Schlesinger appeared emotionally distraught. Actor Jon Voight walked to the celebrated filmmaker and asked what was wrong.

"Are we mad?" the director said, shaking his head as he looked into Voight's eyes. "What will they think of us? Look at what we're making. We're making a film about a dishwasher who goes to New York to sleep with a lot of women. Who is going to want to see this film?"
