Amidst smiles of victory, audible protests and open revolt, the Church of England consecrates its first women priests today in a stately 830-year-old Norman Cathedral.
The Right Rev. Barry Rogerson, bishop of the diocese of Bristol in southwest England, will perform the revolutionary honors when he ordains 32 women, who range in age from 30 to 69.
About 1,200 people, each bearing a special pass, will fill the Cathedral of the Holy and Undivided Trinity for the two-hour ceremony.
