The origin of the gas distribution system dates back to the middle of the last century. The system was predominantly cast iron pipe, but over the years the system mix has changed with the introduction of wrought iron and steel pipe at the turn of the century and plastic pipe in the 1960s.
The distribution system currently consists of approximately 4,100 miles of main, of which 46% are steel, 39% are cast iron and 15% are plastic. Approximately 75% of the system operates at low pressure, 0.25 psig.
